Tribological Properties and Cutting Performance of AlTiN Coatings with Various Geometric Structures

The development of advanced machining techniques requires high-performance tool coatings. To improve the wear resistance and cutting performance AlTiN coatings, a structure optimization strategy involving bias control nano-multilayer architecture is presented. investigated coatings were deposited by cathodic arc evaporation studied with regard to phase structure, hardness, adhesion, tribological properties combination X-ray diffraction, nanoindentation, scratch, ball-on-disk friction tests. A high potential (up ?120 V) enhanced adatom mobility suppressed formation wurtzite AlN in AlTiN. In addition, epitaxial growth Al0.67Ti0.33N on Al0.5Ti0.5N could also promote single-phase structure. hardness AlTiN-based dominated cubic was 3–4 GPa higher than conventional ones. interlayer interfaces Al0.67Ti0.33N/Al0.5Ti0.5N multilayer deflect cracks thus fracture toughness. As consequence, mechanical obtained lowest rate 1.1 × 10?5 mm3/N·m longest lifetime 25 min during dry turning SUS304 stainless steel.
